Checking in: fall 2021
Can it really be almost 2022? Are we returning to semi-normality? Does that phase mean anything? Not sure.
A few of the Mediocre team members are back to going into the office throughout the week… most days. Others have found that they prefer the rhythm of working from home.
Since we last checked in, we’ve continued with our equity efforts, grown our team, attended some virtual events, and participated in some projects. We’re excited to see where 2022 takes us.
On equity
Since our Room For Change post last year, we’ve been mindful of keeping our momentum going on equity efforts: We’re wary of the pitfall of making a nice-sounding statement, and then not follow it up with action.
We’ve been scheduling time for equity learning in every team member’s schedule since last March. We set aside on-the-clock time to read, educate, absorb, or consider something related to racial equity every week. Some of our favorite sources include the following, we recommend checking them out!
Paranormal adventures
We paired up with our friends at Dispatch and ventured into the realm of paranormal mystery adventures in 2021, creating a mystery box to coincide with Angels & Airwaves’ newest album release.
We worked from start to finish on every part of the box: Dozens of websites, clues, print pieces, and strange paraphernalia. The project involved lots of late nights (rare for us!), and all-hands-on-deck work getting the boxes out the door in time for the band’s tour.
We collaborated with Shawn Pryor for the story and language support, and Honey Sage Photo for the on-the-fly photoshoot. Tension Division provided the guardrails with their design for AVA’s album artwork. Thanks to Rise Records for the opportunity – and Breakout for always having us as partners.
Some of our team met with the band on AVA’s tour stop in Cincinnati. We did not join the band onstage.
New work: 2021 and beyond
In 2021 we created a full brand identity and website for Heller Built, a family-owned custom design construction company here in Lexington. We love working with the Hellers, and look forward to being a partner for their ongoing marketing as they grow into 2022. (If you like seeing jaw-droppingly-beautiful custom homes, they’re worth a follow).
We partnered with Kentucky Distillers’ Association to build the new kybourbon.com with tons of features and functionality that we’re proud of, thanks to our friends Onefold Creative.
Hellos & goodbyes
Our new Project Manager, Sandra Martinez, joined the Mediocre team in early November and is already kicking ass. Check out her bio on the Mediocre About Page.
On a sadder note, we lost a team member in early 2021. Ernest Philips was a long-term friend, collaborator and confidant, and his impact can’t be summed up in a paragraph. Read more from Shawn in our post from earlier this year.
Stay safe out there, and stay tuned for more. We’ll see you downtown, six feet away.
